Former President Carter arrives in Guyana
Friday, August 13, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The much anticipated
visit of former US President Jimmy Carter began Wednesday when he and a
delegation touched down in Guyana. Mr.
Carter, who is the Head of the Carter Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, met with
Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon.
Carter is accompanied by a six-member delegation on his visit to Guyana.
The visit is expected to focus on assessment of the current situation to
determine the role of the Carter Centre in Guyana.
The official visit will run from August 11 through 13, with Mr. Carter meeting
political parties, Parliamentarians and civil society groups.
In June this year, President Jagdeo invited the former US President when they
met at the Atlanta-based Carter Centre. The President had thanked him for his
involvement over the years in observing elections, working to strengthen the
electoral process and the Carter’s Centre support for the National Development
Strategy. President Jagdeo is hopeful that
the Carter Centre would be one of the many organisations that would be in
Guyana in 2006 to observe the General Elections. The Carter Centre in 1992 and
1997, as well as Jimmy Carter himself played significant roles in ensuring
that the General Elections processes were transparent.
According to a release from the Carter Centre earlier today, President Carter
thanked President Jagdeo for his invitation “and look forward to meeting with
him, Robert Corbin and members of Guyanese civil society. I have a deep
personal interest in Guyana and believe the basic integrity of its political,
social and economic systems must be made more responsive to the needs and
aspirations of all Guyanese. “The purpose of
my visit is to assess whether the Carter Centre can make further contribution
to this need.”
