Guyanese-born US soldier gets US citizenship while recovering from loss of leg
Thursday, August 5, 2004
WASHINGTON, USA (AFP): Staff Sergeant
Hilbert Caesar, a Guyanese-born US soldier who lost his leg in a bomb attack
in Iraq, received his US citizenship Tuesday along with 29 others at a
ceremony near Washington. "He's a hero," said
Eduardo Aguirre, director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service, who
presided over the ceremony. Caesar, who came
to the United States from Guyana when he was 11 years old, lost his right leg
in April in a roadside bomb attack on his convoy. He said he was proud to be a
US soldier and to have volunteered to serve in Iraq.
"I love helping people, and that's what American soldiers do," he said.
