ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: Thousands of revellers,
enjoying the last lap of Antigua's carnival, had their fun and frolicking
brought to an abrupt end when officials brought the proceedings to an
immediate halt as a result of yet another murder, which took place in the
capital, St. John's on Tuesday evening. The
police told Newsline that an altercation between two young men ended fatally,
with one being stabbed. This latest incident comes less than forty-eight hours
after another stabbing incident on Jouvert Morning in which a 17 year old
youth was killed.
Ironically, the country's minister with
responsibility for culture, Mr. John Maginley, earlier on Tuesday made an
impassioned appeal to revellers to contain themselves as they play mass and
abstain from all forms of violence. His appeal seems to have fallen on deaf
ears. Within recent months, the nation of
Antigua and Barbuda has been grappling with a marked increase in criminal
activity; comprising abduction, armed robberies, break-ins, murders and rapes.
"This is really and embarrassing time for
our country. We hear of these things happening in other places but the stark
reality is now hitting home and it is sad," one local businessman told
Newsline. Investigations by the police are
ongoing into Tuesday’s incident which has added to the dark cloud over the
2004 Carnival Celebrations.
