Grenada's former opposition leader takes action

Thursday, July 15, 2004

ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada: Former Grenada opposition leader Michael Baptiste has made an official complaint to the police alleging criminal libel against Legal Affairs Minister Elvin Nimrod late Wednesday.

Mr Baptiste says he was criminally libelled when Nimrod said in a press conference that he had received a cheque from a foreign government. He insisted that he never received a cheque or any money from any government belonging to Grenada.

Baptiste has instructed his attorneys to take legal action against the government of Grenada and Mr Nimrod for the statement.

Baptiste was arrested and charged in relation to funds the government says were given to him by Japanese officials for the Grenada government, a claim he continues to deny and has called on government to provide proof.

The former opposition leader also took a swipe at the Prime Minister, saying that it is not correct what he told the nation about his trip to Europe in 2000.

Dr Mitchell told the nation, "Indeed, sisters and brothers, that trip was very important in realising our dream for a modern cruise ship terminal in St George’s. It was during that trip that I met and spoke with the senior officials of Zublin, the renowned Swiss development and construction company that was to become the major force behind the multi-million dollar cruise ship terminal."

Baptiste says it was Mr Winston Whyte, Mark Issac and Mr Capeller who signed sealed and delivered that project. He noted that, when the Grenadian leader went to Europe as he claimed, the project was already signed.

But the Prime Minster went on to say during his address, "The time I spent in Europe was extremely productive. Within days after having reached an agreement in principle, Zublin presented the Government of Grenada with its security for ten million US dollars. Within weeks, detailed planning and discussions commenced with the Grenada Ports Authority and the relevant Ministries for the new cruise ship terminal."
