Trinidad Credit Union boss released on bail

Wednesday, July 14, 2004

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Harry Harnarine, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Hindu Credit Union (HCU) has been released on TT$15,000 bail following his arrest on Sunday for leading what police considered to be an illegal march from Free Port Convention Center to the Piarco International Airport.

Harnarine’s bodyguards, Ronald Malchand 39, Norbert Ramdeen 21, and Elvis Sookhoo 22, who were arrested with Harnarine, were also released on TT$10,000 bail each. The four men were also charged with resisting arrest, and were instructed by Arima magistrate Debra Quintyne to return to the court on July 30th.

Acting Police Commissioner Trevor Paul and Northern Division Superintendent Ruthven Bastien both laid the charges against the four men for resisting arrest, marching without a permit, and organizing such a march without application.

Before being whisked away by bodyguards on Monday, the HCU President told reporters that his militant approach was not politically motivated and that there are no future marches planned; but urged his members to submit petitions to the United Nations offices in the nation’s capital, Port of Spain, with the hope that the UN will contribute to the possible efforts made by the authorities to reduce crime in Trinidad and Tobago.

Harnarine led a march in the form of a motorcade on Sunday, but the police on his arrival at the Piarco International Airport halted his efforts. The halt lead to Harnarine’s arrest, and the arrest of his three bodyguards.

Despite the moves made by the police, Harnarine plans on holding a series of anticrime meetings through out Trinidad and Tobago this week and asked that all citizens from every creed and race post a black and white flag in their homes as a sign to the international community that the island needs to be delivered from the constant crime scourge that it faces.

The HCU boss indicated that the motorcade entitled “Capital Flight” was for the purpose of sensitizing the Government and public about the capital that is exiting the country and is affecting its members due to the crime situation in the land.
