Colombia urges Cuba to extradite alleged drug kingpin
Tuesday, July 13, 2004
BOGOTA, Colombia (AFP): Bogota urged Havana
Monday to quickly extradite a suspected Colombian drug kingpin captured in
Cuba this month so that he can be charged in Colombia and sent to the United
States for prosecution. Luis Hernando Gomez
Bustamante, alleged leader of the Norte del Valle cartel, was detained July 2
in Cuba en route to Mexico, where he has close ties to drug traffickers.
After the demise of drug rings in the Colombian cities of Cali and Medellin,
the Norte del Valle cartel became one of the most powerful in the country.
Officials estimate that the group is responsible for between 30 and 50 percent
of the cocaine that enters the United States.
