Peru troops to bolster UN force in Haiti

Monday, July 12, 2004

LIMA, Peru (AFP): Peru will send 196 troops to Haiti to bolster a UN stabilization force in the troubled Caribbean nation, government ministers decided Friday.

The 117 troops from the army, 40 from the air force and 39 from the navy will leave for Port-au-Prince in late August.

Most of the troops will be based in Jamel, 25 miles from the Haitian capital. They will keep public order, improve security and help humanitarian aid workers, the foreign ministry said.

This is the second time Peru has joined such a UN mission. The first was during the 1973 Yom Kippur war between Israel and neighboring Arab countries.

A rebellion in February forced Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide to flee. After the uprising, the United States and France deployed troops to Haiti. A UN force took over last month.

The Brazilian-commanded UN force is expected to eventually total 6,700 soldiers, 1,622 police officers and 900 civil servants. The Brazilian contingent of 1,200 soldiers is already in place.
