SANTIAGO, Chile (Xinhuanet): Chile's Defense
Minister Michelle Bachelet arrived in Haiti Wednesday to visit the Chilean
troops deployed in the Caribbean nation as part of the United Nations
peace-keeping forces.
The minister arrived in the Haitian capital
of Port-au-Prince along with her Brazilian and Uruguayan counterparts Jose
Viegas and Yamandu Fau. local media reported.
Bachelet said the soldiers of her nation
were recognized as individuals who get along well with the Haitians in the
war-torn country.
"We are proud and we have seen that our
troops are not only outstanding in their professionalism but also in their
humane quality," said the minister.
The three ministers flew to Haiti in order
to give a sign indicating that the presence of South American peace-keeping
troops was part of a UN mission seeking to restore stability in the Caribbean
island.
Chile sent a new contingent of 165 marines
to Haiti in May to join the UN troops under the command of Brazilian general
Augusto H. Ribeiro.
The 7,000-strong UN forces, with half of
them from South American countries, replaced a US-led multinational force that
entered the island shortly after the resignation of former Haitian president
Jean-Bertrand Aristide on February 29.
