Humanitarian group avoids Cuba restriction
Friday, July 9, 2004
REYNOSA, Mexico (UPI): Medical supplies and
other equipment bound for Cuba has arrived in Mexico, again skirting the U.S.
trade and travel embargo against the island nation.
"Making this journey is an expression of our opposition to our nation's policy
towards Cuba," said Pastors for Peace executive director the Rev. Lucius
Walker. Pastors for Peace collects donations of medical supplies and other
equipment and has been sending them to Cuba via Mexico for more than 14 years.
The group opposes the U.S. embargo against Cuba, which disallows trade between
the two countries, and calls the shipments of supplies acts of civil
disobedience. The Bush administration June 30
tightened restrictions on travel to Cuba.
Walker said they crossed the border from Texas in a caravan of vehicles on
Wednesday. The members of the caravan were loading the supplies onto a boat
Thursday in Tampico, Mexico, and then fly to Havana. The group is set to
arrive in Havana on Friday and return to the United States 10 days later.
