Coast Guard: new ban on boats to Cuba

Friday, July 9, 2004

WASHINGTON, USA (UPI): No U.S. vessels will be allowed to travel to Cuban waters without a special permit, the Coast Guard announced Thursday. Violators caught without a permit could be fined $25,000 for each day they are in violation and a $10,000 on the spot ticket.

Anyone who knowingly violates the ban could be imprisoned and the vessel impounded.

The permit and ban order replace a three-mile security zone around Florida that was used to prevent boats of 50 meters or less from entering Cuban waters. The security zone was put in place after Cuba shot down two small U.S. aircraft in international airspace in 1996.

"The unauthorized entry of U.S.-registered vessels into Cuban territorial waters is detrimental to the foreign policy of the United States, which is to deny monetary and material support to the repressive Cuban government," states a presidential proclamation signed in February.
