ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada (UPI): Caribbean
leaders voted not to recognise Haiti's interim government at this time,
Haiti's National Television reported Wednesday.
CARICOM leaders opted instead to send a delegation to Haiti to discuss ways to
restore diplomatic ties with the troubled nation and whether they would
endorse the U.S.-backed interim Haitian government led by Prime Minister
Gerard Latortue. The decision was made during a meeting in Grenada of the
15-member Caribbean Community.. Haiti was
thrown into political and social turmoil in February when armed rebels
pressured then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to resign amid growing
violence. Aristide left the country and is
currently in temporary asylum in South Africa. He maintains however he was
duped into leaving by U.S. officials. More
than 200 people were killed in fighting between the rebels and militants loyal
to the former leader. Initially, CARICOM did
not recognise the Latortue-led administration as legitimate and called for the
return of Aristide.
