Chinese military delegation in Cuba

Thursday, July 8, 2004

HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Cuba's armed forces welcomed a Chinese military delegation, the third from Beijing to visit the only communist-ruled country in the Americas this year, official media reported Wednesday.

The delegation led by Zhang Wentai, head of the logistics division of China's army, met with Cuba's General Julio Casas Regueiro, the Cuban Communist Party daily Granma reported.

Cuba paid tribute to Chinese military cooperation over the past four decades, including pilot training back in the 1960s, Casas Regueiro noted.

The Chinese delegation was due to depart Friday after visiting military installations, military training sites and historical and cultural sites.

In June 2001, President Fidel Castro denied US press reports on supposed Chinese arms sales to Cuba, saying that since 1990 Cuba has not invested a cent in arms.
