Prison guards beat dissident in Cuban prison
Wednesday, July 7, 2004
MIAMI, USA (AFP): Cuban prison guards beat
dissident Jorge Luis Garcia Perez and relatives who visited him in prison,
exile groups claimed Tuesday, quoting a sister of the prisoner.
"They savagely beat him to the ground," the Cuban Democratic Directorate
quoted Bertha Antunez as saying. She said the
guards also pulled his arms in opposite directions, as if trying to break him
in two. "He started to bleed from the neck," she said.
The Cuban Liberty Council said the dissident's wife, his sister and a
nine-year-old boy were also beaten up by the dozens of guards involved in the
incident at Ariza prison, in Cienfuegos province.
The incident, which occurred Monday, started after Perez insisted his family
be given hundreds of letters he had written but were held by prison
authorities, the Miami-based groups said.
"Our family and our lives are at risk," Antunez said, according to the Cuban
Democratic Directorate.
