US activists defy Cuba travel ban
Tuesday, July 6, 2004
HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): A group of 81 US
activists arrived in Cuba Monday from Canada in defiance of Washington's new
travel restrictions to the communist island, Cuban media reported.
The travelers from the Venceremos Brigade, which has been sending volunteer
agricultural workers to Cuba annually since 1970, were welcomed by officials
at the airport in Santiago de Cuba, 860 kilometers (534 miles) southeast of
Havana, the Prensa Latina agency reported. On
Thursday, the United States tightened sanctions against Cuba in a bid to
hasten the fall of Fidel Castro's communist rule.
Under the new restrictions, Cuban-Americans can visit relatives in Cuba once
every three years, for only for 14 days, and are allowed to spend only 50
dollars a day, down from 165 dollars.
