Jamaica names Bolt, Fenton to Olympic athletics team
Monday, July 5, 2004
KINGSTON, Jamaica (Xinhuanet): Jamaica on
Saturday named sprinter Usain Bolt and 400-meter runner Lorraine Fenton in its
45-member athletics squad for this summer's Athens Olympic Games.
The 17-year-old Bolt, who has been inactive
since injuring a hamstring in May, will also compete at the World Junior
Championships in Italy later this month, the Jamaica Amateur Athletics
Association said in a statement.
Bolt will defend his title in the 200 meters
at the junior games. He holds the 200-meter world record for the junior level,
clocking 19.93 seconds at the CARIFTA Games in Bermuda in April.
Fenton, missing the national trial due to
injury, finished runner-up in the 400 meters at the last Olympic Games in
Sydney, Australia, in 2000.
Also named in the squad is sprinter Asafa
Powell, one of Jamaica's best hopes for a gold medal.
The 21-year-old Powell ran 9.91 seconds in
the 100 meters at the National Senior Championships held in Kingston in June,
putting him in strong contention for gold in Athens. That time was a new
Jamaican record.
Four-hundred meter runner Sandie Richards, a
veteran of four Olympic Games, has also been included.
The Caribbean island is hoping to surpass
its respectable haul of seven medals at the 2000 Sydney Games.
Jamaica is expected to compete in other
events including boxing and swimming.
