Former US president Carter to visit Guyana
Monday, July 5, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP): Former US
president Jimmy Carter said Saturday he will visit Guyana to determine the
feasibility of a fact-finding mission by his Carter Center to help the country
map a development strategy.
His spokeswoman, Deanna Congileo, said
Carter had accepted an invitation by President Bharrat Jagdeo to visit Guyana
and conduct an assessment about the future role of the Carter Center in
supporting the national development strategy.
"The purpose of my visit is to assess whether the Center might be able to make
further contributions to the improved welfare of all Guyanese," Carter said in
a statement. Jagdeo said Friday he hoped the
Carter Center would remain in Guyana in the run-up to the 2006 general
elections and observe the poll. The Carter
Center closed its doors here in May after being involved in electoral reform
and observation since 1990.
