Friday, July 2, 2004
KINGSTOWN, ST Vincent: Airport authorities
in St Vincent and the Antigua-based Directorate of Civil Aviation are
currently carrying out investigations into what caused a Trans-Island twin
otter aircraft to run off the airport runway and crash into the perimeter wire
fence, 2 feet from the main road, on Wednesday.
Deputy Director of Airports Joel Jack said
the aircraft, which is owned by Trans-Island Air operating out of Barbados,
was leaving the E.T. Joshua Airport en route to Canouan at 1pm when the pilot
said he encountered problems. Mr. Jack said
according to the pilot, the aircraft which was chartered by regional airline
LIAT to Transport luggage to St Vincent and the Grenadines from Barbados when
it veered uncontrollably to the right of the main runaway during take-off,
before lodging on the fence.
He said that plane was apparently stopped
from entering the busy highway by a storm drain and the perimeter fence.
Mr. Jack said the three occupants of the
plane at the time - the pilot, his co-pilot, and an engineer - all escaped
without injury, though a little shaken.
The incident resulted in the airport being
closed for just over an hour and a half.
