Cuban dissident says he will be allowed to travel to Spain
Thursday, July 1, 2004
HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Cuban dissident Eloy
Gutierrez Menoyo said Wednesday Cuban authorities have allowed him to travel
to Spain to attend a conference of the Socialist Workers Party.
"This represents a flexibility from the government toward the independent
opposition on the island," Gutierrez Menoyo, 68, said in a statement.
Gutierrez Menoyo, founder of the opposition group Cambio Cubano (Cuban
Change), has been in legal limbo since he returned to Cuba in August from
exile in the United States. The one-time
guerrilla fighter, who emigrated to Cuba from Spain as a youth, served 22
years in prison for opposing Fidel Castro's communist regime before being
released in 1986.
