Regional disaster management centre planned for Montserrat

Thursday, July 1, 2004

BRADES, Montserrat (GIU): Captain Horatio Tuitt, Director of the Emergency Department in Montserrat, says there are plans to set up a regional disaster management centre on the island.

He made the disclosure during a brief opening ceremony of the 2004 hurricane preparedness conference on Wednesday.

Captain Tuitt said it is envisaged that the facility would later expand into a centre of excellence - allowing people from the Caribbean and other parts of the world to conduct field-based studies in disaster management and other related subject areas on Montserrat.

Montserrat has been in the forefront of disaster management in the Caribbean after almost ten years of volcanic activity. Also speaking during the opening ceremony were the Governor Mrs Deborah Barnes-Jones and the Chief Minister John Osborne.

Chief Minister Osborne said, “We have to be all aware that the hurricane season is here... but I hope we never get a hurricane this year and that the volcano never comes back."

He appealed for continued partnership in disaster management.

Governor Barnes-Jones, attending her first conference on hurricane preparedness since arriving in MOntserrat in early May, said she has been impressed with the radio jingle highlighting the need to be aware and also to be prepared during the hurricane season.

In relation to the national hurricane plan, the Governor said, "Everybody has an equal role to play."

The top British official on the island concluded by noting that she is looking forward to being involved in the various simulation exercises and was seeking the co-operation of all the residents on Montserrat.
