Bahamas high-speed ferry service suspended
Tuesday, June 29, 2004
FORT LAUDERDALE, USA: Bahamas Florida
Express has suspended its high-speed ferry service between Port Everglades,
Florida and Freeport, the Sun Sentinel reported Monday.
The firm began daily trips last November on the CAT, a sleek 900-passenger
catamaran, but was scheduled to substitute a smaller vessel for the seasonally
slow summer months. But late last month, the
deal to obtain a smaller vessel fell through, according to
ferrybahamas.com,
the company website. The CAT was chartered from Bay Ferries, which employs it
for summer service between Maine and Nova Scotia.
Another factor in the shutdown is the failure of Bahamas Florida Express to
get dock space at Prince George Wharf in Nassau. The website says that the
Bahamian-owned company is negotiating service to Nassau, subject to the dock
space. It says service will resume to
Freeport and commence to Nassau "immediately" following the grant of approval
by the Bahamas government. The Bahamian
Ministry of Transport and Aviation is busy meeting the July 1 deadline for
international port security standards, according to local media reports, and
isn't putting the Bahamas Florida Express dock space request on a fast track.
