Finnish ambassador robbed at gunpoint in Guyana
Thursday, June 24, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP): Finland's newly
appointed ambassador to Guyana, Ora Meres-Wuori, was robbed at gunpoint here
over the weekend, a Guyanese foreign ministry official said Wednesday, as
police searched for a second suspect in the case.
The incident occurred as the envoy and his wife visited Georgetown's lush
Promenade Gardens last Sunday, one day before he officially presented his
credentials to Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.
"He ran after one of the boys and caught him," said Elizabeth Harper, director
general of Guyana's foreign ministry. But she noted that he "did not lodge a
formal complaint" with Guyanese authorities.
Police said a gunman placed a gun to Meres-Wuori's head and robbed him of 25
dollars in cash. A 14-year-old boy was
arrested in the case, and Principal Magistrate Cecil Sullivan has ordered that
he remain in jail until Monday, when he is scheduled to be arraigned.
Deputy Police Commissioner Henry Greene told AFP Wednesday that police had an
arrest warrant and were searching for a second suspect, Joel Gardner.
Guyana and Finland established diplomatic relations in 1979.
