Famous gay leader killed in Jamaica
Friday, June 11, 2004
KINGSTON, Jamaica (UPI): Jamaica's
best-known gay rights activist was found dead from a series of stab wound,
local news sources reported Thursday. Police are reportedly searching for the
two men Brian Williamson was seen speaking with at his home just hours before
his death, the Jamaican Observer reported Thursday.
"At this time the police are theorizing
robbery to be the motive as a money safe he had is missing and the apartment
was ransacked," said Cpl. Devon Hugh Williams of the Constabulary
Communication Network. "(But we have) a strong lead that there were two men at
the apartment earlier in the morning."
However, gay rights groups in the Caribbean nation alleged it was a hate
crime. Jamaica has an international reputation for its intolerance of
homosexuals.
