ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada: The Federal Bureau of
Investigation in the United States has made an official request to the
Government of Grenada relating to a passport issued to Van Brink. Brink was
arrested last week in Kampala and handed over to US authorities by the Ugandan
government. Brink had been indicted in the
United States on several charges of wire fraud and money laundering, including
a scheme where hundreds of US citizens lost millions of dollars in the now
defunct First International Bank of Grenada of which he was president.
The FBI request to Grenada was made through the Financial Investigation Unit (FIU)
of the Royal Grenada Police Force. Brink was
issued a passport by the Grenada Government in the late 1990’s, which expired
some time last year. It is still unclear
whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued any directive to its
missions’ abroad to cancel the passport of Brink before it actually expired.
The First International Bank fiasco remains one of the most embarrassing
experiences for the Grenada government, especially when under the Prime
Minister’s watch as Minister of Finance the proper procedures for the setting
up of that bank were not followed. Brink was
allowed to pay only $110,000 and provided a photocopy of a picture of a jewel
as the guarantee to get the license to operate the bank.
