Jamaican police nab their most wanted suspect
Saturday, May 29, 2004
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (AFP): Jamaican
authorities have arrested the Caribbean island's most wanted fugitive, a
40-year-old man investigators have linked to at least eight murders, police
said Thursday. Joel Andem, wanted by police
in connection with murder, rape, extortion, kidnapping and robbery, was
arrested early Wednesday in Clarksonville, St. Ann, a remote rural village
near the country's interior. Andem, who had
been on the run for four years, did not resist police who found him after
months of investigating. He was arrested in a
house he shared with an elderly man believed to be his father, a woman and an
infant. The two adults could face charges of harboring a criminal.
Newspaper photos showed a bare-chested and handcuffed Andem, with a piece of
masking tape over his mouth, being taken by police from a vehicle to a
security facility. Senior investigators in
Kingston have linked Andem to at least eight murders, including that of gas
station operator Sylvia Edwards, who was abducted and killed in 2000.
Security Minister Peter Phillips praised the arrest and vowed that police
would hunt down "key figures" of organised crime and violent individuals who
prey on vulnerable communities.
