Friday, May 28, 2004
ROAD TOWN, BVI: Forty-three illegal
immigrants were arrested in the British Virgin Islands Thursday and handed
over to the Immigration Department for repatriation.
Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Dean Fahie, reported that that HM
Customs received a telephone call at about 5:30am, indicating that a number of
illegal immigrants were hiding on Peter Island.
He said a team of Customs officers, as well as members of the Royal Virgin
Islands Police Force Marine Unit, immediately travelled to Peter Island and
conducted an extensive search of the area, including the surrounding waters.
Mr. Fahie said 43 illegal immigrants – mostly Haitians and nationals of the
Dominican Republic – were found, adding that they were promptly arrested and
handed over to the Immigration Department, which is currently making
arrangements for their repatriation. However,
Mr. Fahie explained that the members of the joint team from HM Customs and
Police are combing the area for additional illegal immigrants who may still be
hiding.
