Smoking banned in public buildings in Saba

Thursday, May 27, 2004

THE BOTTOM, Saba: On Wednesday morning Commissioner with responsibilities of Public Health and Environment Ms. Lisa Hassell unveiled a "No Smoking" sign at the Government Administration Building in Saba. This new measure has gone into effect for all public buildings on the island.

Commissioner Hassell said there have been many complaints about persons smoking within public buildings and the Executive Council has been looking into this matter. With the assistance of the island Secretary, the smoking ban was implemented as of Wednesday.

Commissioner Hassell said, “Everyone is becoming more health conscious now and as government you have to set the example and that is what we have decided to do.”

She went on to state that cigarette smoking does not just affect the ones that are smoking but it also affects those around. Second hand smoke is considered a serious health hazard for non smokers and can cause chronic respiratory conditions, heart disease and cancer.

The How Healthy is Saba? report has also exposed some of the problems that we are confronted with as a government when it comes to cancer etc. and as a responsible government we had to come with this measure,” Commissioner Hassell said.

Commissioner Hassell said that it is her firm belief that the whole island of Saba should become smoke free and that will solve many medical problems.

“Not everyone will be happy with it but at least as a government we are doing our utmost best to try and help save the life of our people. I look forward to all department heads making sure that no smoking will take place in their place of work and should the measure not be respected that the Executive council will be informed accordingly. We had to start somewhere and I am happy that finally we can now put this in place in the general interest of health care on Saba,” she added.
