US Coast Guard intercepts immigrants bound for Puerto Rico
Thursday, May 27, 2004
MIAMI, USA (AFP): One hundred Dominican
Republic immigrants were intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard as they
tried to reach the nearby US island of Puerto Rico, the US Coast Guard said
Wednesday. The immigrants, 82 men and 18
women, including two pregnant mothers, have been transferred onto a Coast
Guard boat from their 35 foot vessel and will likely be repatriated.
They were picked up by the Coast Guard on Tuesday.
The Dominican Republic and the commonwealth
of Puerto Rico are separated by a stretch of sea named the Mona Passage, whose
strong currents are notoriously treacherous to navigate.
Some 4,995 immigrants from the Dominican Republic have been intercepted at sea
since October.
