Antigua-Barbuda government calls urgent meeting with WIOC
Wednesday, May 26, 2004
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua: Prime Minister of
Antigua and Barbuda Baldwin Spencer has called for an urgent meeting with the
principals of the West Indies Oil Company Ltd., the suppliers of fuel in the
country, to discuss the pending increase in gasoline and diesel prices.
Key Executives of WIOC were due to fly into
the country in response to the Prime Minister’s special request.
Over the past two weeks the government has been engaged in discussions with
the company to lessen the effects on local consumers of a world wide increase
in fuel prices. West Indies Oil Company Limited presently enjoys a monopoly on
the importation of fuel. Prime Minister
Baldwin Spencer will head the government’s team at the meeting with the
principals of the West Indies Oil Company.
The current global situation involving fuel prices can result in substantial
increases at the pump. However, Prime Minister Spencer has intervened in an
attempt to protect the population from the hardship that will result from any
increase in the price of gas and other fuels.
In an effort to explore alternative energy sources, the Prime Minister met
with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago at his
residence in Port of Spain on Saturday. Prime Minister Spencer said that the
meeting with Prime Minister Patrick Manning was very positive and Antigua and
Barbuda is looking forward to a special arrangement as he believes that
Trinidad and Tobago can play a very important role at this time.
