Joseph and Bravo help themselves to hundreds
Tuesday, May 25, 2004
ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada (AFP): Sylvester
Joseph and Dwayne Bravo completed contrasting hundreds for the West Indies
Cricket Board XI in the three-day, cricket tour match against Bangladesh on
Sunday.
Joseph hit the top score of 115 and Bravo
offered him essential support with exactly 100 to propel the WICB XI to 320
for five declared on the second day at the Queen's Park Stadium.
Bangladesh, as usual, found themselves in early trouble, but an unbeaten
half-century from Mohammad Ashraful and a supporting knock from Faisal Hossain
helped them to reach 124 for four when stumps were drawn.
Ashraful has struck half dozen boundaries in 67 not out and Hossain hit seven
fours in 43 in adding a valuable 75 for the fourth wicket.
After Hossain was adjudged lbw to unorthodox left-arm slow bowler Dave
Mohammed, Ashraful then completely dominated an unbroken stand of 45 with Alok
Kapali. Not given any favours by the West
Indies selectors, Bangladesh confronted a new-ball attack that comprised the
resurgent Jermaine Lawson and the rested Corey Collymore, and were tottering
on four runs for three wickets.
Collymore made the breakthrough when he
removed opening batsman Javed Omar and acting Bangladesh captain Rajin Saleh
for ducks off successive balls in his first over.
Ashraful averted the hat trick only for Lawson to have Hannan Sarkar caught
behind for one next over. Ashraful and
Hossain then offered stout resistance to the WICB XI attack for over two hours
to lift the mood of their side.
Earlier, Joseph and Bravo helped their
chances of winning their first Test caps for West Indies either in the next
few days against Bangladesh or the next few weeks against England on the tour
of Britain this summer. The two knuckled down
for a 212-run third-wicket partnership that stole the fire right out of the
Bangladesh bowlers. Joseph hit 15 fours and
one six in his fourth first-class hundred and Bravo found the boundary eight
times for his fourth first-class hundred also.
After they were finished, Carlton Baugh, Jr., the second-string West Indies
keeper, hit a rapid, unbeaten 52 to boost the WICB XI total and command a
partnership of 64, unbroken, with the recovering Omari Banks for the sixth
wicket. This is Bangladesh's only warm-up
match prior to their two Tests against West Indies in St. Lucia, starting on
Friday, and in Jamaica, beginning on June 4.
