Rain cuts short Bangladesh tour match
Monday, May 24, 2004
ST. GEORGE‘S, Grenada (AFP): A wet outfield
following persistent overnight and early morning showers cut short the opening
day of Bangladesh's three-day tour match against the West Indies Cricket Board
XI on Saturday. The WICB XI, choosing to bat
after nearly five hours were lost, reached 82 for two with Sylvester Joseph
not out on 42 and Dwayne Bravo not out on 23.
Umpires Glenroy Johnson and Terence Birbal made two inspections before play
commenced at 7 pm (GMT). They were
particularly concerned about an area at the southern end of the ground that
was quite sodden from the drenching, but both teams were quite anxious to get
play for varying reasons. For Bangladesh,
it's their only warm-up match prior to the two Tests against West Indies at
Gros Islet (May 28-June 1) and Kingston (May 4-8).
For the WICB XI, there are a number of
players looking to cement their places in the senior West Indies squad not
only for those two Tests, but also four against England on the tour of Britain
this summer.
Left-handers Wavell Hinds and Devon Smith,
candidates to open the batting in any of those Tests, were dismissed cheaply.
Hinds was beaten and bowled off-stump
between his bat and pad by Tapash Baisya and the leaden-footed Smith was also
bowled off the inside edge by Tareq Aziz to leave the WICB XI 25 for two.
Joseph and Bravo, looking to win their first
Test caps, batted resolutely for the next two hours before the umpires offered
them light to add 57, unbroken, for the third wicket.
Joseph, the WICB XI captain, hit half-dozen
fours, mostly through the leg-side, from 108 balls in 2-1/2 hours and used his
feet well to the spin bowlers, while Bravo was troubled a great deal by the
spin bowlers, but fought his way through.
Summarised scores:
WICB XI 82 for two (Sylvester Joseph 42 not out, Dwayne Bravo 23 not out) vs
Bangladesh
