OECS Heads briefed by Grenada's Opposition

Monday, May 24, 2004

ST. GEORGE‘S, Grenada: Representatives of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) who attended the recently held 39th Authority meeting in St. Vincent and the Grenadines were briefed of the situation in Grenada by a special envoy of the main opposition National Democratic Congress.

Senator Arley Gill travelled to St. Vincent and briefed the various delegations about the situation in Grenada regarding allegations of corruption and the failure of the government of to have parliamentary meetings.

The opposition has being holding talks with the Trades Union Council, Conference of Churches, Chamber of Industry and Commerce among other stake holders in an effort to muster support to force the ruling government to resign and call fresh elections.

Plans are well on the way to have what the opposition says will be a massive march in St. George's on Friday against corruption and to call on the government to resign.

The Mitchell led administration is plagued with allegations of corruption and with dealing with shady and questionable characters. Two former diplomats who were appointed by the Mitchell government are presently indicted by the United States government on fraud and money laundering charges.

Meanwhile the opposition has vowed to bring down the government through legal and constitutional means.

All eyes are being focused on Grenada once again after an international finance newsletter, Offshore Alert, accused the Prime Minister of accepting US$500,000 from a well known fraudster, a charge he has since denied. He claims to have received only US$15,000.
