Windies name ODI squad for three-nation series in England

Saturday, May 22, 2004

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (AFP): Darren Sammy is the only uncapped player in the West Indies' 15-member squad for the three-nation one-day international series with England and New Zealand in England next month.

The 20-year-old all-rounder is one of 11 members of the squad aged 25 or under and now has the chance to become the first player from the island of St. Lucia to play international cricket for West Indies.

A right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler, Sammy was a member of the Young West Indies side that reached the final of the ICC Youth World Cup New Zealand 2002 and spent last season playing for the world renowned Marylebone Cricket Club in England with whom he toured Sri Lanka.

Sammy, who was the fourth highest scorer for Windward Islands with 261 runs at 26.10 in the West Indies first-class championship this year, when his 22 wickets were the 10th highest in the Championship, also played for Barnes CC in the Middlesex Premier League in Britain last season.

All of the members of the squad selected for the ODI series against Bangladesh that West Indies swept 3:0 - except Sylvester Joseph - have also been picked for the series that commences on June 26 and ends with the final on July 10 at Lord's.

Experienced fast bowlers Mervyn Dillon and Corey Collymore, however, have not found favour with the selection panel under the chairmanship of legendary West Indies batsman and former captain Vivian Richards.

Dillon and Collymore are currently the most experienced West Indies bowlers in both forms of the game with 49 Tests and 156 ODIs between them, but they have had limited success in both versions of the game lately and lost their places to a string of younger fast bowlers.

Clearly casting their eyes to the ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 and building a side with enough depth and experience to be competitive on home soil, the selectors have gone for the youth and pace of Tino Best, Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul instead.

Carlton Baugh, Jr., the second string wicketkeeper for the last year, has also been included.

West Indies squad:
Brian Lara (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Carlton Baugh Jr, Tino Best, Ian Bradshaw, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Chris Gayle, Ridley Jacobs, Ricardo Powell, Ravi Rampaul, Darren Sammy, Devon Smith, Dwayne Smith.
