
Chilean Senate approves new troop deployment to Haiti

SANTIAGO, Chile (AFP): Chile's Senate on
Wednesday approved President Ricardo Lagos's plan to send a new contingent of
578 soldiers and police to join the multinational force in Haiti.
Chile already has sent more than 330 troops to the Caribbean nation as part of
a UN operation following the departure February 29 of deposed president Jean
Bertrand Aristide. The new forces, which
include 36 police, were expected to join the multinational force from June 1.
