Historic constitutional review in BVI
Friday, May 21, 2004
ROAD TOWN, BVI: For the first time in the
history of the British Virgin Islands, the process of constitutional review is
being carried out within the BVI by locals alone, and not as a declaration of
the British Government. The recently
appointed Constitutional Review Commission has planned a series of public
meetings throughout the Territory to obtain feedback from citizens on the
review process. Chairman of the Commission
Mr. Gerard Farara, Q.C., is encouraging members of the public to attend the
meetings to voice their views and suggestions on the process, saying this will
ensure “continued constitutional advancement for the good governance of the
Territory.” The Commission is also inviting written and oral submissions from
the general public. Chief Minister Dr. the
Hon. D. Orlando Smith launched the nine-member Commission on April 26, tasking
the group with conducting a review of the Constitution in order to ensure the
Territory’s continued advancement and good governance. The process will
address a broad range of issues and Government is encouraging wide ranging
discussions and public meetings.
