China seeks deeper 'fraternal links' with Cuba
Thursday, May 20, 2004
HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): A Chinese Communist
Party delegation expressed solidarity with Cuban leader Fidel Castro as he
confronts a mounting US embargo, the official press reported Wednesday.
The delegation led by Wang Jiarui, head of the international department of the
Chinese party's central committee, met Castro on Tuesday night, said Granma,
the Cuban Communist Party daily. Wang said
"China is working to consolidate fraternal links" between the two countries,
the official Prensa Latina news agency said, without giving more details of
the meeting. The Chinese official also met
Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque and Vice President Carlos Lage.
China has taken a cautious line on investment in Cuba and shelved plans to
finance two major hotels in 2002. But it has sought deeper military
cooperation with visits by several senior Chinese military leaders.
General Xu Caihou, head of the political department of China's People's
Liberation Army, visited in April. Cuba was a
longtime Soviet ally but has strengthened links with China following the fall
of the Soviet bloc in 1990.
