Dominican banana farmers benefit from Chinese funds

ROSEAU, Dominica: Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Planning, Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that 930 banana farmers stand to benefit from the EC$300,000 made available by the Government of Dominica to the Dominica Banana Producers Ltd Tuesday.

It was also revealed that 30 new entrants into the banana industry would also benefit from the funds coming from the People’s Republic of China.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Skerrit pledged that his government would continue to assist the Dominica Banana Producers Ltd and the banana farmers of Dominica in general.

Minister for Agriculture and the Environment, Ambrose George underlined the importance of the banana industry to the Dominican economy. Mr George stated further that this cash donation demonstrated the resilience of the government in assisting the banana industry in these challenging economic times.

Managing Director of the Dominica Banana Producers Ltd, Mr Richard Charles thanked the Government of Dominica for the cheque. Mr Charles revealed that the DBPL would open a Cess Account and banana farmers would get inputs based on their level of production. Mr Charles told the media present that for the first time since 2002, the DBPL passed 300 tons per week last week.

Meanwhile, the Dominican leader revealed that EC$200,000 is now available to assist non-banana farmers in Dominica.
