
Report on plans for new cricket stadium in Antigua

ST JOHN’S, Antigua: A ten-member team of
Chinese surveyors and engineers commissioned to carry out a comprehensive
study of the cricket grounds at North Sound has updated Prime Minister Baldwin
Spencer on their work plans and schedule. The
Team is lead by Mr. Youn Xu Peng and comprises a senior engineer, a water
supply and drainage engineer, a structural engineer, an electrical engineer,
architects and Quantity and Estimation Surveyors.
The Chinese Team pointed out to Prime Minister Spencer that the Ministry of
Public Works has designed a work programme which will facilitate their efforts
to formalize a design concept. It was noted that the preliminary design
concept after completion, will be submitted to the Government for further
scrutiny. Prime Minister Spencer inquired of
the construction period and the expected seating capacity of the new stadium
to host World Cup 2007 matches and was advised that work is expected to
commence early 2005 and be completed early 2006.
Junior Minister in the Ministry of Sports Winston Williams was also appraised
of the plans for the new Cricket Station which will have a seating capacity of
10,000. Antigua and Barbuda was among 11
countries which handed in submissions (Bid Book) to host matches in the ICC
Cricket World Cup 2007. The Bid Book which
consists of 24 Deliveries including elements such as cricket stadium and
cricket operations. The Venue Assessment Team comprising an independent group
of world games experts will assess the bids by visiting the countries between
May 24 to June 11. The countries selected to
host matches will be announced on July 4 while the award of matches will be
revealed on July 12.
