
Service providers in Dominica to benefit from Chinese money

ROSEAU, Dominica: A number of social service
providers in Dominica are to receive cheques totalling EC$115,000 at a
ceremony at the Dominica Infirmary on Wednesday. The institutions are: the
Dominica Infirmary; Grotto Home; Operation Youth Quake; Mahaut Home for the
Aged; Portsmouth Home for the Aged; CALLS in Portsmouth and Reach.
The US$6 million from the Chinese Government
is the source of funds being used by the Government of Dominica to finance a
number of projects around the country. On March 29th 2004, Prime Minister,
Roosevelt Skerrit announced to the nation that Dominica had severed ties with
Taiwan and established new relations with the People’s Republic of China.
At a press conference Monday, Prime Minister
and acting Minister of Education Roosevelt Skerrit, confirmed that EC$50,000
is being made available to students at the Dominica State College to help with
their exam fees.
And in keeping with a promise given to the
banana farmers a few weeks ago, Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit presented a
cheque of EC$300,000 to Mr Richard Charles, Managing Director of the Dominica
Banana Producers Ltd.
