Moves to unseat Grenada’s PM

Tuesday, May 18, 2004

ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada: Moves are well underway here to unseat the government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell in light of allegations that he received some $500,000 from a former German diplomat who is now in prison in Singapore.

During a rally organized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday dubbed “People’s Parliament” and attended by close to four thousand people, a resolution was approved to use all legal and constitutional means to remove the New National Party government.

The resolution states that the widest possible consultation be immediately held with all national stake holders including other opposition political parties, the chamber of Commerce, Trades Union Council, as well as the conference of churches and the Grenada Bar Association among others.

It further states that mass action be taken to force the immediate sitting of parliament to discuss the burning issue surrounding a sum of money the Prime Minister allegedly received in a briefcase in 2000.

In reading the resolution former Minister of Tourism Joan Purcell said in the last ten years there have been a number of allegations of corruption levelled against the government, for which no adequate answers or explanations have been provided including the sale of Grenada’s passport to questionable characters, guaranteeing of massive loans to shady individuals with suspect reputation as well as the handing over of dividends from Cable and Wireless to pay the debt owed by family members.

The opposition party says the people of Grenada were no longer prepared to submit themselves to the shame, humiliation and embarrassment brought upon them and the country by the NNP regime.

Among the actions agreed upon is a candle light vigil outside parliament building on Tuesday and a public trial of the Prime Minister and his New National Party on Sunday followed by a demonstration in the streets of St. George next Friday.
