Body of kidnapped Iranian cleric found in Guyana
Thursday, May 6, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP): The partly
decomposed body of an Iranian cleric, kidnapped a month ago, has been found in
a shallow grave with gun-shot wounds to the head, police said Wednesday.
Mohammed Hassan Ebrahimi's body was found
was in a grave in a sparsely populated sandy semi-forested area near an Indian
Reservation, Deputy Police commissioner Henry Greene said.
Greene said an autopsy showed that Ebrahimi, 35, died of two gunshot wounds to
the head. Police discovered the body late
Tuesday in a three-foot (one meter) deep grave near the St. Cuthbert's
Amerindian reservation, some 29 miles south-west of Georgetown.
Officials of the local Shiite Muslim community were called in early Wednesday
to confirm the identity of the body. "The
body was found lying face down with the mouth taped, hands tied behind the
back and feet tied. It was clad in the same clothing that the deceased was
last seen wearing," police said in a statement.
No one has been detained in connection with the crime. Police said
investigations were ongoing. Ebrahimi was
kidnapped late on April 2 after heading to the International Islamic College
for Advanced Studies (IICAS) to investigate a report, made by telephone, of
water dripping from the top flat on computers on the lower flat.
Police, IICAS officials and his Iranian widow, Shahnaz Ansari, who is eight
months pregnant, have no clues as to the motive for the kidnap-murder of
Ebrahimi. The kidnappers had not contacted
anyone or issued a ransom demand.
A four-member Iranian police team last week
left Guyana for neighbouring Venezuela to continue their investigations into
the incident.
