Canadian oil firm back in Guyana
Monday, April 26, 2004
TORONTO, Canada: According to the Calgary
Herald, a Canadian oil company, expelled four years ago by Suriname over a
maritime border dispute with Guyana, recorded the first seismic images at its
onshore concessions along the Cortenyne Coast, officials said.
Toronto-based CGX Energy Inc. began exploring its onshore concessions for oil
last week through its Guyanese subsidiary, ON Energy, said Warren Workman, a
company vice-president. "The data quality was
good and we're very pleased with the progress we've seen thus far," Workman
said Friday. "Recording is expected to continue through May."
They were the first seismic images recorded along Guyana's coast since the
1940s, he said. The company said it was hoping to drill exploratory wells in
the region by the summer. Suriname and Guyana
both claim hundreds of square kilometres of territory off the South American
coast believed to contain large deposits of oil and natural gas.
