Jailed Cuban dissident determined to continue hunger strike
Wednesday, April 14, 2004
MIAMI, USA (AFP): Jailed Cuban dissident
Leonardo Bruzon Avila is determined to continue his hunger strike to the death
if he is not freed or put on trial, a Miami-based group said Tuesday, quoting
his mother. Alcira Avila, who visited her son
at a Havana military hospital on Sunday, said the dissident was only kept
alive by an intravenous drip, according to the Miami-based Cuban Democratic
Directorate. Bruzon Avila, who has been on a
hunger strike for more than 40 days, insists "they must try him or release
him," his mother said. "If this does not happen, he is willing to die."
Bruzon Avila, who has been jailed in Cuba without trial for over two years,
weighs only 75 to 80 pounds, she said. "It
seems to me my son cannot walk," she said.
