ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada: A seven member Cuban
delegation headed by Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation
Marta Lomas is in Grenada.
The Cuban delegation is attending the
seventh session of the Cuba-Grenada Joint Commission for Economic and
Scientific Technical Cooperation, currently underway in St. George’s.
In welcoming the delegation, Prime Minister Mitchell said the mutual trust and
respect that Grenada and Cuba have for each other have enabled both countries
to benefit at the domestic level, regionally and in the international arena.
A release from the Prime Minister's office says Minister Lomas referred to the
General Hospital as “the symbol of our collaboration” and said she was pleased
with the structure, the surroundings and the services provided to patients
when she visited the facility briefly on Monday. Follow-up meetings will be
held with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Works on Phase Two of the
General Hospital.
The release added that during discussions on
youth development, Prime Minister Mitchell noted the importance of providing
learning opportunities, as well as social and recreational opportunities, in
order to help young people overcome the social pressures they face.
From April 19 to 23, 1997, Prime Minister Mitchell made an Official Visit to
Cuba, leading a 26 member delegation comprising public and private sector
officials. As a result of that historic visit, a Basic Agreement on Economic
and Technical Cooperation was signed by Prime Minister Mitchell and President
Castro. Since then, cooperation has expanded to include sports, tourism,
education, agriculture, infrastructure and health care.
