Protesters heckle Blair in Bermuda
Saturday, April 10, 2004
HAMILTON, Bermuda: British Prime Minister
Tony Blair was heckled by anti-war protesters when he arrived in Bermuda for a
family holiday, days before his talks about Iraq with US president George Bush
and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
According to Britain’s Press Association, a
small, but vocal group of protesters lined a road outside the British
territory’s airport yesterday, criticising Mr Blair.
“He’s a dirty rotten scoundrel and I am not going to welcome him,” said
protester Lisa Kitson, a 26-year-old biology student.
Governor John Vereker met Mr Blair at the airport and whisked him away in his
limousine. Looking relaxed in a check shirt and blue suit, Blair smiled as he
passed the protesters. Mr Blair joined his
wife, Cherie, who was already in Bermuda. The length of his visit, thought to
be his first to the resort island of 62,000 residents, was not clear.
Mr Blair will meet Annan in New York on April 15 and Bush in Washington on
April 16. The talks will be dominated by the spiralling violence in Iraq.
