Iran sending fact-finding mission to Guyana to investigate cleric's kidnapping
Thursday, April 8, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP): Iran is sending a
fact-finding mission next week to Guyana to investigate the fate of a
kidnapped Iranian cleric, an official said Wednesday.
Muhammad Hassan Abrahemi, 35, was abducted outside the International Islamic
College of Advanced Studies late Friday as gunmen fired several shots at his
car and the building. He remained missing.
Sheikh Salim Ibn Abdul Kadir, interim head of the college, said the delegation
would arrive next week after getting visas from the Guyanese embassy in
Venezuela because "it's been five days and we expect more.
"We heard that there are going to be a couple of our colleagues coming. I know
for sure that with this thing (abduction) being of such a nature, I expect
people to come from the government to investigate, to follow up or even to get
word from the government," Kadir said. Shiite
Muslims in Guyana "are not pleased with how the police is running the thing,"
Kadir said. Deputy Police Commissioner Henry
Greene however said several more police teams have been deployed and more
people are being questioned. "We are doing
the best in the circumstances but we are not getting information," Greene
said.
The kidnappers have not contacted the
college or Abrahemi's wife, Shahnaz Ansari, demanding any ransom. Police are
providing security for Ansari as well as another college official who was shot
during the kidnapping.
