Windies drop Chanderpaul for last Test
Tuesday, April 6, 2004
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AFP): The West Indies,
down 3-0 and in danger of a Test series whitewash for the first time in
history, have made only one change to their squad for the fourth and final
Test, starting at the Antigua Recreation Ground on Saturday.
West Indies have dropped long-standing
left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul and brought in the uncapped Sylvester
Joseph, as they have resisted sweeping changes to the batting that has been a
major letdown in the series. They lost the
opening Test at Sabina Park by 10 wickets, the second Test at Queen's Park
Oval by seven wickets, and the third Test at Kensington Oval by eight wickets
as England completed their first series victory in the Caribbean for 36 years.
The 25-year-old Joseph toured Australia with Jimmy Adams' team three years ago
and has made four One-day International appearance. But he is yet to play a
Test. Joseph gains his place in the squad
after scoring the fourth highest aggregate in this year's West Indies
first-class championship of 517 runs at an average of 43.08 in seven matches.
He strengthened his claim with a useful performance in the three-day tour
match against Michael Vaughan's side before the Bridgetown Test, where he
gathered 36 and 50. Squad:
Brian Lara (captain), Tino Best, Pedro Collins, Corey Collymore, Fidel
Edwards, Daren Ganga, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Sylvester
Joseph, Ricardo Powell Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Smith.
