Prime Ministers Gonsalves and Spencer hold talks
Saturday, April 3, 2004
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: St. Vincent and the
Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves arrived in Antigua Friday for
talks with Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer on the future of LIAT and a number
of other issues. Dr. Gonsalves who flew into
the country on a one day visit for the talks, said he had spoken to Mr.
Spencer briefly last week during a stop-over from the 15th CARICOM Inter-sessional
which was held in St. Kitts. Dr. Gonsalves
said over the past three years some Caribbean countries have consistently
"batted" for LIAT and as it is his responsibility, being the CARICOM Minister
for Air Transport, he wanted to have some in-depth discussions with Mr.
Spencer. "I spoke to him on the phone also
and naturally he is very supportive of LIAT so we have to meet now and
strategize on where we are going, look at what stage we are at and so
forth..." Dr. Gonsalves also pointed out that
he would also take the opportunity to discuss a number of CARICOM matters with
Mr. Spencer. "I would like to specifically
deal with Haiti. Mr. Spencer is expected to take over the Chairmanship of the
core group on Haiti, in addition to the Chairmanship of CARICOM, so I need his
take on that. I also want to talk with him a bit about Cricket World Cup 2007.
“The former Prime Minister, Lester Bird was the Chairman of that committee.
That was not an Antigua and Barbuda Chairmanship. It was a chairmanship in
persona and that chairmanship has now gone to Dr. Keith Mitchell of Grenada,
who is a former Leeward Islands player, so he is very keen on the Caribbean
hosting the tournament. Prime Minister Spencer and myself are also members of
the special committee overseeing the preparations for World Cup 2007 as both
Antigua and Barbuda and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have placed bids to
host matches." Dr. Gonsalves said he is
looking forward to fruitful discussions with Mr. Spencer and there will be a
joint statement issued at the end of the talks.
