Guyana says Caribbean should reject Aristide extradition
Saturday, April 3, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP): Guyana's President
Bharrat Jagdeo said Friday that Caribbean nations should oppose moves by the
interim Haitian government to extradite ousted president Jean Bertrand
Aristide on embezzlement and murder charges.
The Guyanese leader said the 15-nation Caribbean Community (CARICOM) would
likely reject plans by Haiti's Justice Minister Bernard Gousse to ask for
Aristide's extradition back to appear before an independent body.
Aristide is currently in Jamaica with his wife and two children.
"If that request were to come to CARICOM, I think that's how it's going to be
treated. Of course, Jamaica is a sovereign country and Jamaica is free to
decide what it wants but on this matter I would not support any such call,"
Jagdeo said. Haitian Prime Minister Gerard
Latortue has estimated that up to one billion dollars in state funds was
pilfered under Aristide and at least 300 people were killed in the three-week
rebellion before Aristide fled into exile on February 29.
CARICOM does not recognize the interim Haitian administration.
