Bahamas pipeline gets another approval
Thursday, March 25, 2004
MIAMI, USA (UPI): The US government has approved a second firm to build a natural-gas pipeline between Freeport, Grand Bahama, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Tractebel received the approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Wednesday to run the line, The Miami Herald reported.
The firm, however, is still seeking approval from Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet. The cabinet said earlier this month there were environmental questions about the project that still need to be answered.
The concern is focused on possible damage to the coral reefs.
The cabinet will consider the project at its meeting next month.
A competing plan, by AES, has already received the necessary federal permits. The AES pipeline would connect a regasification plant on Ocean Cay in the Bahamas to Dania Beach, Florida.
A third plan, by El Paso and Florida Power and Light Co., is still seeking permits.
Tractebel's plan, known as the Calypso project, was started by Enron before that firm went under.
