MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (AFP): Police said Monday they had killed a man the FBI had placed on its 10 most-wanted list for drug and murder charges.
Police said they killed Hopeton Eric Brown, 30, also known as "Sandokan," in a shootout here.
Jamaican authorities wanted Brown for a double murder committed here in 2001. US officials had offered a 50,000-dollar reward for information leading to his arrest and capture and warned that he was "armed and extremely dangerous."
US authorities sought him on drug, murder and attempted murder charges. The FBI said he had 10 aliases and had operated in the US states of Florida, Minnesota, Connecticut and California.
Jamaican police said US Marshals were en route to the Montego Bay morgue to view his remains.
On Sunday morning, police went to the Lilliput area of Montego Bay seeking suspects in the shooting death of an 18 year-old man at a dance in nearby Barrett Town, about 2:30 that same morning.
As police approached a house, they came under heavy fire. After returning fire, they found Brown had been shot. They took him to Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police recovered from Brown a Carbon 15 pistol, fitted with a 16-round magazine and seven spent cartridge casings. In the house were a second unidentified man and several large caliber handguns.
